Kuvempu University was established in 1987, under the provisions of Karnataka State Universities Act by the Karnataka Government. Kuvempu University is duly recognized by the University Grants Commission and accredited by NAAC. The university spreads over an area of 519 acres including four campuses; the main campus of Kuvempu University is Jnana Sahyadi which is located at Shankaraghatta, a Post-Graduate Centre is situated at Kadur, another Post-Graduate Centre at Chikkamagaluru and a campus is located in Shivamogga. More than 90 colleges are affiliated to the University.
Kuvempu is a Research-intensive University, where research is a primary activity. Many ongoing institutional and individual research projects of the university are sanctioned by various national agencies. All the teaching faculties provide research guidance with an output of an average of 150 Ph.Ds. awarded every year to the students from various disciplines.

Kuvempu University has various Under-graduates, Post graduate, Diploma, Five Year Integrated Course and Ph.D. programs in disciplines like Science and Technology, Arts, Humanities, Education, Social Sciences, Management, Commerce, Computer Science, Engineering, and more extraordinary programs with a wide range of syllabi and innovative methods of pedagogy.
The University also offers many courses in Management, Commerce, and Arts. In Management and Commerce, they offer B.Com, B.B.M., M.B.A., M.Com, PG Diploma in Financial Institutions and Markets, Human Resource Management, and more diverse courses. Apart from that, a variety of courses in Arts and Humanity are offered like, B.A., M.A. in Language, Sociology, Political Science, Journalism, History, Economics, Education and more. University also provides B.F.A., M.F.A in Applied Arts, Painting, Graphics, and Sculpture Painting. The innovative courses in Translation, Tourism, Social Psychology, and Counseling are also available for students.
Kuvempu University has Distance Education Centre which is approved by Distance Education Board, UGC. With an objective to educate those who are deprived from regular education program, the University offers higher education through distance mode as well.
Momentous Achievement and Accolades
As per the Scopus rating, a notable ranking system, from 2010 to 2016 Kuvempu University has been ranked first among the state university in Karnataka. According to National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking is 78, Kuvempu University ranked first among the state university in Karnataka. The University received recognition as one among the four shortlisted universities for “Swachta Andolan” in Karnataka. Apart from these major achievements, Kuvempu University was the first in Karnataka State to implement the choice based credit system in the year 2005 for all its post-graduate systems.

Kuvempu University believes that co-curricular activities are as important as academics. Rather than just classroom studies, they emphasize on the overall development of the students. The university has several facilities and equipment for all sports activities and modern multi gymnasium for students. The best performer in sports activities is felicitated with the gold medal Vishwamanava. There are many students who outperformed in international sports tournaments like Kho-Kho, Power Lifting, Karate, Kabaddi, Chess, Volleyball and more. Some of the international sports performers who represented Kuvempu University have won several medals.
Mr. Kishan Gangoli represented Kuvempu University in chess, he is an outstanding blind chess player (75% of visual impairment) who has represented India and has participated in Blind Chess Olympiad. He is two times Olympiad medalist for 2013 and 2017 respectively. He has won four times National ‘A’ Champion in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. He is the only Indian to get 15th place in International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) world championship.
