Serving with the motto, ‘Fide et Labore’ (‘Faith and Toil’), St. Joseph’s College of Commerce is one among the many Jesuit Educational Institutions governed by Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES). The college was part of St. Joseph’s College, which was established in the year 1882. This parental college formed the Department of Commerce in 1949. Later in 1972, it became an independent college under the name of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. The college is located on Brigade road in Bangalore and is spread across 2.5 acres.

From the beginning, the college has striven to be a state-of-the-art institution for commerce education. The thrust has been on the pursuit of multi-dimensional educational excellence. Currently, it enjoys an ‘A’ grade with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college has been responsive to the significant changes and developments in the field of higher education, as well as in the domain of commerce and business.

The college offers diverse courses in Commerce and Business Administration, which are:

  • Com (Regular), Professional, Professional Studies, Business Process Management, Travel and Tourism and Analytics
  • BBA (Regular), Professional, International Twinning and Entrepreneurship
  • Com (Finance and Taxation/ Marketing & Analytics), M. Com (International Business), and M. Com (Financial Analysis)
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Business Administration, HRM, Marketing, Tourism, Financial Management, International Business, and Capital & Commodity Markets

Apart from these, the college offers value-added courses and professional certification programmes in several multi-disciplinary domains. All these courses are guided by the three intertwined goals of the Institution: Academic Excellence, Social Concern, and Character Formation.

Using this profound curriculum, the college has produced many accomplished alumni such as Rahul Dravid, Mohandas Pai, Salil Shetty, Ramya, Ashish Ballal, Prakash Raj, Mahendra Jain, S K Uttappa, who have excelled in their respective fields.

Many visionaries have contributed to the excellence of the college. However, one personality stood tall among them in terms of holistic and integral formation of the students. This dynamic personality is the Principal, Dr. Daniel Fernandes SJ, who continues as the longest-serving principal with 17 years of exceptional leadership. The college also attributes its success to all the Jesuits and Principals who have worked tirelessly on the campus.

Dr. Daniel has steered the institution in providing diversified programs, established meaningful partnerships and collaborations, offered the right direction to the staff and students. He has achieved this by constantly reaffirming the institutional vision, mission & ethos and has led the institution successfully through several accreditations, affiliations, and rankings. His transformative and visionary leadership propelled the institution into the league of Top 10 Colleges in India for Commerce Studies.

According to the college, its strengths lie in its campus culture. The institution, with its state of the art facilities, provides an excellent environment for students to engage in learning ‘inside classrooms and beyond classrooms’. The college guides the students on the campus into celebrating their diversity in language, culture, ethnicities, religion, and nationality. For managing the present-day high stress of the student community, the college offers a robust mentorship system and four full-time counselors providing emotional support and counseling services.

An Institution for the Students

The college arranges guest lectures, industrial visits, field visits, national & international exposure programs, and compulsory corporate internship for the students. It also conducts social internship programs to create the right exposure for the students. The institution strives relentlessly in creating the right ecosystem on campus for industry-academia interface. Keeping the same thoughts, the college has a dedicated placement cell, which has placed many students in some of the top companies in the country and in several NGOs. This year, the highest placement offer was Rs. 21,00,000 PA from a reputed company for the role of a decision scientist.

Promoting Commerce Education

The college reveals that it is seamlessly integrating the employability quotient into all of its programs and courses. To strike the right balance between employability and knowledge acquisition, the college regularly updates its curricular with necessary corporate and industry inputs, experiential learning techniques such as internships, planned field visits, social, and industrial visits. These are anchored in the possibilities and the challenges of the real world and equip students with an interdisciplinary understanding and nurture in them a strong, ethical orientation, and moral responsibility.
