Over a holiday weekend, Ava Finnerty passes away due to cancer at the age of 72. John Niesz, the superintendent of schools said, “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Trustee Ava Finnerty has passed away.”  

“After a long career at the district, she went on to become a dedicated and respected member of the BOE. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends,” Niesz said.

Finerty was among the first to get elected for ‘Board of Education’ trustees. She was re-elected in 2018. Before her tenure of board of education, Finnerty was a career educator. She served as a teacher for 42 years. She devoted 32 years in Bayonne district and the other eight she spent in teaching for parochial schools in Jersey City including St. Paul’s School and Sacred Heart.
