Charnock Healthcare Institute: Establishing Talented Workforce for the Healthcare Sector
Charnock Healthcare Institute

To develop this institute into a world-class institution, renowned for its infrastructure, excellence in academics and professional acumen

The industry experts estimate Indian healthcare sector to rise at around $280 billion by 2020 and the rural healthcare at an estimated USD 30 billion market. Due to the absence of established distribution channels, it is challenging to approach this area. Assuring access to affordable healthcare in India is a critical task that calls for a robust ecosystem and effective collaboration between government, industry, and academia. This notable gap between ‘required’ and ‘actual’ healthcare infrastructure has driven significant investment into assets like hospitals and other facilities over the years. The expanding availability and affordability of healthcare are spurring demand for other services such as diagnostics, pharmacies, equipment etc. The Indian Healthcare industry faces challenges in terms of optimal utilization of resources, reducing operational costs, boosting performance and efficiency, business scaling, evolving technology, globalization of healthcare delivery quality, and standards.

Merging the same gap is a unique medical institution- Charnock Healthcare Institute (CHI), which is creating a qualityworkforce for all levels of healthcare delivery. It is the first dedicated institution, which provides high-quality healthcare education in fields of Nursing, Paramedics & Hospital Administration conducting both GNM & B.Sc (Nursing), B.Sc (Operation Theater Technology),B.Sc (Critical Care Technology) and MHA. Packing a capacity of 1020 students, its infrastructure comprises modern state-of-the-art centrally AC, Wi-Fi, CCTV campus in New Town, Kolkata. It has digital classrooms, spacious and equipped laboratories, library enriched with over 5000 books, periodicals, journals, and a huge reading arena.

The Architect behind CHI

Sri Prashant Sharma is the Managing Director of Charnock Healthcare Institute. He is an Alumnus of the prestigious Indian School of Business and Harvard Business School. He has also completed Sr. Executive and Leadership Programs from Kellogg School of Management, Chicago, Wharton School, Philadelphia, USA, INSEAD, France and FDC, Brazil.

Sri Prashant Sharma is not only an avid entrepreneur but also possesses a unique flair in academics. He is equally driven by his quality education, passion, and commitment. Coming from the healthcare industry, he was well aware of the nuances, the demand-supply gap between industry requirement and the institute that churn out such health care professionals. He also realized that it is not only a numerical gap but also a qualitative gap. He raised this concern in the various national forum of CII. In order to address both the gaps, he conceptualized and developed Charnock Healthcare Institute.

Under his leadership, the institute is comparable to any top institute of the world in terms of infrastructure. The idea behind such a high investment infrastructure is that when the student graduates from the institute, they are already accustomed to the corporate environment. The student will be joining hospitals having a similar environment.

Higher Education Review rates CHI amongst top five Nursing colleges in India and it is the sole institute in eastern India who has a tie-up with NHS-UK.

CHI has inculcated a vigorous growth strategy and within a few years, it will have 100 intakes in every nursing and paramedical course. Furthermore, the institute is planning to spread its wings and plans to open new institutes across India.

Industry Trends and Adaptation

Like Medicine, Nursing is also dynamic by its own way and this dynamism gives rise to diverse trends. Today, sound empirical knowledge is the base of nursing as in any other healthcare education. This knowledge is the base for all the innovations, which emerge as trends in nursing. The trends in nursing education are the cornerstone for the dynamic nature of the nursing profession. These trends are in the fields of Curriculum Innovations, Technology & Nursing, Student Population, and Clinical Teaching Learning Process & Modes of Education. The institute suits them in the following way:

Nursing Informatics: The institute is implementing Nursing Informatics by integrating science and practice that combines nursing, its information, and knowledge, with the management of information and communication technologies to promote the health of people, families, and communities worldwide.

Training Modules: Simulations are gaining wider acceptance in the nursing education system with the concepts of patient safety and consumer protection. Consequently, CHI is implementing simulation as the “process of designing a model” of a real system and conducting experiments virtually with hi-tech mannequins.

Clinical Teaching: The institute emphasis more on clinical nursing education. Nursing faculty is now reaching up responsibility and accountability to patient care acknowledging that clinical exposure of the student does not mean the clinical practice. To conquer this dilemma faced by novice and experienced faculty, CHI emphasizes clinical teaching and training of all nursing faculty to be mandatory in Indian settings.

Corporate Grooming: To pair up with the corporate world, the college train students for the corporate culture. It invites CEOs of different companies for special lectures. In addition, it conducts regular sessions for personality development. They provide a designated mentor for student’s enlightenment of corporate culture.

Stress Management: Nursing is a 24/7 job and often become strenuous and stressful. During clinical practice, the students can feel fatigued due to stress. Therefore, CHI conducts special sessions in Yoga, Karate etc. not merely focusing on academics but also on the mental, physical, and other holistic development of the students.

Changing Job roles: The responsibility of nurses has evolved a lot. Today their service is not restricted to the hospital and patient only care but rather societal. Keeping these shifting aspects in mind, CHI organizes several medical camps such as blood donation camp, HIV awareness camp, childcare camp in the campus and outside the campus.
