DAV University: A Legacy Redefining the Indian Educational Scenario

DAV University traces its roots to the legacy that has been reforming and redefining India’s educational scenario for 130 years. The University has been established by a Legislative Act of the Punjab Government and empowered to confer degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act 1956.

DAV University, Jalandhar is promoted by DAV College Managing Committee which is India’s single largest non-government educational organization managing more than 800 educational institutions in the country. It has been providing students with an excellent education in modern academic environment. The setting up of the University is the culmination of the movement that started with the founding of the first DAV School in Lahore on June 1, 1886, to propagate the ideals of the religious and social reformer Swami Dayanand Saraswati.

The Agricultural Department of DAV

Department of Agricultural Sciences is established under the aegis of DAV University with an aim to achieve excellence in academics and research. The Department offers four years course in B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and two years Masters’ programme in Genetics & Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology and Vegetable Science. The Department has designed a dynamic and focused curricula as per the guidelines of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to develop well-trained manpower for academics, agro-based industry and extension oriented applications. In post graduate programmes, students undertake specific research in fundamental and applied aspects of agriculture and its allied fields.

The vision of the Department is to develop highly specialized manpower in diverse areas of agriculture and its applications in industry, commercial food, fuel and fodder production, environment and research.

Agriculture graduate has a variety of career opportunities ranging from academics to manufacturing, marketing, banking, extension work, State Agriculture Department, corporations and quality control. Many students of the Department have qualified various competitive examinations like ICAR- JRF, State Agriculture Universities Entrance Examinations and pursuing their Masters in the renowned Agricultural Universities like Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, SKAUST, Jammu and CSK HPKV, Palampur in different disciplines including Soil Science, Agronomy, Genetics & Plant Breeding, Agri. Extension, Horticulture- Pomology, Vegetable Science etc. Students of the Department have also joined different Masters’ programmes in foreign Universities of repute.

Dr. Punam Suri, Padma Shree Awardee, is the Chancellor of DAV University. An illustrious grandson of Mahatma Anand Swami, Shri Punam Suri is an eminent educationist, with a rare sense of futuristic initiatives in the field of education. A distinguished alumnus of British Institute of Management, London, U.K., he exhibits unique approach in decision making, leadership, growth and innovation. World Systems and increased tie ups with Indian & Foreign Universities have jointly paved a path for giving new dimensions to the educational programme at DAV under his stewardship.

Distinguished academician and noted administrator Prof (Dr) Rakesh Kumar Mahajan is the Vice- Chancellor of DAV University. Mahajan has held several major positions at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar including Head of Chemistry Department, Professor-in-Charge (Examinations), Dean, College Development Council, Coordinator, University-Industry Linkage Programme and Dean, Faculty of Science.

An M. Sc. in Chemistry and Ph. D. from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, Prof Mahajan specializes in Physical Chemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry.
