Elon Musk, a transplant from Texas, intends to create a university in Austin, according to tax records for one of his charitable organizations that were initially made public by a reputed news agency.

With a $100 million donation from Musk, the nonprofit organization The Foundation intends to establish and open an Austin primary and secondary school that will educate math, science, technology, and engineering. According to the application, the institution would concentrate on establishing a university once it is fully operating. In order to open for business, the school must first apply for accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The university would instruct students in person “as well as using distance education technologies,” according to the petition. It anticipates scaling up with time, starting with 50 students enrolled. Though the application also indicates that the school may offer financial aid if a student is unable to pay tuition or fees, the institution would mostly rely on donations to sustain its operations. According to the filing, it is currently employing administrators, teachers, and an executive director.

Musk’s proposal to establish a new institution in Austin, which is currently the location of the prestigious institution of Texas at Austin and several other private universities, coincides with the announcement of the formal fall 2024 opening of a second new private school in the city.

A group of critics of higher education believed that there was no longer a free exchange of ideas between students and teachers on American college campuses, so they founded the University of Austin two years ago.

President of the University of Austin Pano Kanelos expressed his desire that the university can serve as an advocate for open dialogue and free speech.

Kanelos stated, “It seems like we’re living in a time when things are falling apart, where people are pulling away from one another, and where institutions are trembling at the core.” “Building new things is the best response.”

The name of Musk’s new university is still pending. A request for comment was not immediately answered by the Foundation.
