Farmers’ Training-Cum Kisan Mela

The Agriculture Department of Karunya Deemed University organized “Farmers’ Training-Cum Kisan Mela at Karunya Nagar, Siruvani Road, Coimbatore on 27th February 2019. Over 250 farmers and over 500 agriculture students participated and benefitted from the programme. Agriculture exhibition was also arranged in the mela.

The event was inaugurated by The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. P.Mannar Jawahar and he spoke about the importance of agriculture and its problems such as water crisis, unremunerative price to the farm produce, etc. He urged farmers to adopt innovative practices to improve crop yields.

While speaking on the occasion, Professor James, Pro-vice Chancellor of the University , highlighted the importance of irrigation to crops and water management to tide over the water crisis. He said Water and Food are among the topmost priorities for research in the university. He stated that agriculture extension services would be the regular feature of the university’s annual activities.

Prof. Jacob Annamalai , Dean of the University spoke about the extensions services planned in future for the benefit of farmers.

Prof. K.K.Krishnamurthy , former Dean and Director of TNAU, moderated the farmers’ discussion. Professor Prakasam of TNAU highlighted the importance of organic farming. Professor Muthu Krishnan of TNAU explained the pest and disease control in the crops of Coimbatore district.

The event was attended by Dr. C.Palaniswami , Head of Division of Sugarcane Breeding Institute; Mr. Vaseegaran, AGM, NABARD, Mr. Kannan, Senior Manager, Syndicate Bank; Mrs. Kousalya Mohan, Deputy Director, Agriculture Marketing,, Mr. Murali from Agricultural Engineering Department.

Prof. Kuruvilla Varughese , head of agriculture department of the university, welcomed the guests. The event was supported by NABARD and Syndicate Bank.
