Key Background:

Laurentian University has announced the establishment of the IAMGOLD President’s Innovation Fund for Strategic Investment, in collaboration with IAMGOLD Corporation. This $2.5 million initiative aims to support academic and research projects that align with the university’s strategic priorities and foster innovation in the fields of mineral resources, mining education, and research.

The new fund is designed to facilitate the realization of innovative ideas that have the potential to impact a wide range of industries. Areas of focus include environmental initiatives such as emissions reduction, water stewardship, biodiversity support, and tailings management, as well as social opportunities such as community engagement, workforce development, and Indigenous reconciliation. Additionally, the fund aims to enhance collaboration and innovation across Laurentian University’s campus.

IAMGOLD’s Zero Harm vision, which prioritizes health, safety, environmental responsibility, and community relations, is central to this partnership. This investment further strengthens Laurentian University’s position as a leader in Canada’s mining sector.

The IAMGOLD President’s Innovation Fund is open to students, faculty, staff, and student associations. It will support projects that address pressing challenges in the mining industry by providing education and research-based solutions. The fund also aligns with Laurentian’s Strategic Plan 2024-2029, supporting priorities such as Northern Excellence in Mining and Critical Minerals, institutional collaboration, and equity for diverse groups.

Projects can receive up to $50,000 per year for a maximum of two years. This initiative underscores Laurentian University’s commitment to advancing mining innovation while reinforcing its bilingual and tricultural identity.
