Lethbridge Post-Secondary Institutions Gear Up to Support Incoming Students as Academic Year Begins
Lethbridge

Lethbridge’s post-secondary institutions are preparing for a busy weekend as students return to campus ahead of the new academic year. Both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic will welcome students with move-in day on Sunday, setting the stage for classes to begin next week.

Lethbridge transforms into a vibrant educational hub from September to April, hosting thousands of students who require housing and support services. Among the newcomers is Eugene Apau, an international student from West Ghana who has been in Canada for just two weeks. “It’s great to be in Lethbridge and in Canada,” Apau remarked, reflecting the optimism shared by many students as they settle into their new environment.

To ease the transition, the University of Lethbridge has organized several events during the first week to help students feel welcome and supported. Natasha Reners, the coordinator for the upcoming new student orientation, highlighted the importance of these initiatives. “We have a booth fair where students can chat with fellow students, their mentor team, and housing services,” Reners explained.

Housing is a critical concern for many students. The university reports that 950 students have already secured on-campus accommodations, while Lethbridge Polytechnic has only four rooms remaining, with applications currently on hold. Both institutions have systems in place to assist students in overcoming challenges throughout the academic year.

“Research shows students who have access to supports are more successful as they complete their programs, so we’re just trying to get them connected to the resources they need on campus early on,” Reners added.

As students prepare for their first classes next week, whether in dormitories or off-campus rentals, Lethbridge is set to resume its role as a key center of education in southern Alberta, providing a welcoming environment for both local and international students.
