Manitoba Implements Universal Nutrition Program in All Schools for 2024 Academic Year
Manitoba

As schools across Manitoba commence their academic year this week, the provincial government has announced the full rollout of its universal nutrition program. Premier Wab Kinew, Education Minister Nello Altomare, and River East Transcona School Division Superintendent Sandra Herbst unveiled the initiative at Donwood School on Thursday.

The program, which promises nutritious meals and snacks for all students, reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that no child learns on an empty stomach. Premier Kinew emphasized the importance of adequate nutrition for student success, stating, “We made a commitment to Manitoba families that we’d ensure kids across our province had access to food when they go to school, and we’ve delivered on that promise.”

The provincial government has allocated approximately $21 million to support this initiative across Manitoba’s 37 school divisions. Of this, $6 million is specifically designated for the 50 schools identified as having the greatest socio-economic needs. This funding aims to enhance the capacity of schools to provide consistent and quality nutrition to students.

Education Minister Altomare highlighted Manitoba’s pioneering role in school nutrition, stating, “This back-to-school week is the first week we’ll see food in every school in the province. This is an important step in ensuring every child in Manitoba is set up to succeed in school and grow up healthy.”

Additional funds are being directed to community organizations such as the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba to further support the program. Winnipeg School Division Superintendent Matt Henderson noted that the provincial funding will address existing gaps in school nutrition programs. He emphasized that while not all 79 schools in the division will serve hot meals, every student in need will have access to food without stigma.

Henderson acknowledged the diverse needs of different neighborhoods and communities within the division, ensuring that the resources will be allocated equitably to meet varying requirements.

The comprehensive nutrition program represents a significant advancement in supporting student well-being and educational achievement across Manitoba.
