Key Background:

Nipissing University has received a generous $2 million donation from The Joyce Family Foundation, aimed at supporting students facing socio-economic challenges. This substantial contribution will establish the Joyce Family Foundation Bursary Fund, providing crucial financial assistance to undergraduates from Northern Ontario.

Each year, three students will be awarded a $5,000 bursary, renewable for up to four years. To be eligible, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, entering their first year at Nipissing University, and have graduated from a Northern Ontario high school within the last three years. The bursary is specifically designed for students with significant financial need and a proven ability to overcome obstacles.

A unique aspect of this bursary program is its emphasis on mentorship. Awardees must participate in a mentorship program throughout their academic journey, ensuring they receive valuable guidance, resources, and networking opportunities to support both their academic and professional growth.

The Joyce Family Foundation was established by Ronald V. Joyce, the Canadian entrepreneur best known for building the Tim Hortons franchise. The Foundation continues his legacy of philanthropy, focusing on improving the lives of children and youth across Canada.

This $2 million gift enhances Nipissing University’s commitment to accessibility and student success, further enriching its scholarships, bursaries, and awards program. The donation reflects the institution’s dedication to providing an inclusive and supportive environment where students can thrive, regardless of financial barriers.
