Purvanchal Institute of Dental Sciences is located in Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh and was founded in the year 2006. It is a part of the Shree Rama Educational Society which includes individuals who are socially committed professionals working towards educational, economic, social and cultural upliftment of the society. The institute is affiliated to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University and has constantly been providing an environment that is professional and conducive for learning, while promoting the importance of team spirit among students.
The dental college also comprises of a fully functional hospital which provides exclusive dental treatments to its patients. The clinics of various departments such as Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Conservative dentistry, Pedodontics, Orthodontics and Periodontics are all equipped with excellent quality and contemporary dental chairs, diagnostic and various other clinical equipment.
Architectural Provision for the Learners Benefit
The institute is spread over an extensive lush green area of 11 acres and provides the students with a variety of sport activities such as cricket, football, badminton, throwball and volleyball. As for indoor sports, there are options of table tennis, chess, carom and board games. One of the unique features about the institution is its theme based canteen named the Purvanchal Café. It also has two libraries, an auditorium, a seminar hall, a computer lab fully enabled with Wi-Fi and a convenience store. The institute also has a student cell and anti-ragging cell which is devoted to ensuring that the students aren’t facing any inconveniences and everyone is equally monitored. The Dental Council of India has also been incorporated into this cause and is involved in conducting multiple seminars to spread the awareness about the menace of ragging and ways to find a solution for the same. Each student is also allotted up to 3 faculty members who act as a mentor for them in their complete educational journey and to provide any assistance to anyone in case of emergencies.
The students also have separate hostels for boys and girls with a hygienic mess where they are provided with nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, evening tea as well as dinner. The rooms are well furnished with air cooling units and a common room for their leisure hours fitted with a television and indoor games. There is also a provision of 24/7 hot and cold water supply, 24 hours of power backup, and lush green gardens as well as open spaces for the students to relax. They can also stay worry free as the students are guarded by round the clock security and a hostel warden.
Academic Outline-Courses Offered and Methodologies Practiced
Currently, the institute provides a full time course of Bachelor of Dental surgery which lasts over four years and has seen a very high success rate among the students. In the near future, PIDS is working on its goal to introduce multiple new courses such as the Master of Dental Surgery, BSc. Nursing, Diploma in OT Technician, Accidental Trauma, Physiotherapy, Dental Hygienist etc. These courses will benefit the students’ academic outlook and also provide them with a variety. The institute also features an in campus 100 bedded multispecialty hospital by the name of Purvanchal Multispecialty Hospital. In a combined manner, it serves over 300 patients daily belonging to both dental as well as the medical OPD.
The institute is also known for implementing various new age methodologies to ensure the educational benefit of its learners. One such method is active learning which has been implemented into the curriculum along with CDE (Continuing Dental Education) and it ensures that monthly assessments are conducted regularly. It also makes it possible for students to achieve their goals and helps them find their own comfort zones with regard to the subjects involved. Collaborative team based learning is another method that the institute applies for the students’ educational pursuits. This is where the students are placed into different groups where they will have to hold discussions and take part in the various seminars and group presentations. This builds the quality of team spirit in them which is essential for the field they’re venturing into. The method of experiential learning is where the students face the real situations and in turn gain experience the varied methods of treating the patient in a dedicated clinic. PIDS is also the only dental college in a radius of 200 kms. which is inclusive of cities like Allahabad and Varanasi and nearby country of Nepal. There are multiple patients that visit in a day and the students are able to work on them while also honing their practical skills. As part of this, the institute also conducts dental camps in schools and villages on a fortnightly basis to bring out the spirit of community service among the students.

Dr. Rajeev Gulati is a renowned personality in the arena of dentistry and this is a result of over 37 years of excellent academic experience. He is an alumni of King George’s Medical College in Lucknow and his achievements can be seen in the form of various gold and silver medals as well as certificates of honor in the multiple disciplines of dentistry. He is also a fellow of International College of Dentists (USA).
Dr. Gulati is the Vice Chairman and Head of Department of Orthodontics at Purvanchal Institute of Dental Sciences. According to him, the various batches of dentists that have graduated from the institute have brought a lot of joy and pride to PIDS as well as all those whose hard work was a part of it. It constantly brings him immense joy in knowing that this dream has been a result of a dream manifested into reality which has been handed down from generation after generation. Being one of the most senior and experienced dentists of the state, he knows that the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh needs to fill in the gaps of inadequacy of dental surgeons. He thus has been working towards making sure that the upcoming generations will not have to go miles for various dental treatments.
Wide Array of Interesting Opportunities
On the co-curricular front, UDAAN is the annual festival organized by the institute and includes a plethora of events in the categories of sports, indoor activities as well as a cultural show. The sports events include cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, tug of war, kho kho, throwball and athletics. Rangoli making, skit, mehendi, dumb charades, poetry, GK quiz, canvas painting, face painting, hair styling, collage making and soap carving are some of the indoor events that are conducted. As a conclusion to the fest, a full night of singing and dancing competitions as well as a stand-up comedy and a fashion show is organized. Trophies, medals and certificates are presented to the students to appreciate their hard work and achievements during the festival. UDAAN is an annual event that takes place during the spring season and provides the students with a platform to explore and showcase their talent and present it in front of a large audience.
