Dr. Martin, who has been an integral member of the TWU community since 2008, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the role.
Dr. Martin’s tenure at TWU began as a faculty member in sociology and family studies, later serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. In this role, he significantly advanced faith integration across academic disciplines. His leadership was further demonstrated as he was appointed provost, where he led strategic planning initiatives and strengthened the university’s external relations and academic partnerships with faith-based institutions.
Following the departure of Dr. Mark Husbands in June 2024, Dr. Martin has served as interim president and provost. During this period, he has been widely recognized for his commitment to TWU’s Christian identity and its mission to provide a Christ-centered education. Matthew St. John, Chair of TWU’s Board of Governors, highlighted Dr. Martin’s respect among faculty, staff, alumni, and students, noting that his leadership has earned trust and admiration across the university community.
In his statement, Dr. Martin expressed the privilege of leading TWU, emphasizing the unique value of a Christian perspective on education and the importance of supporting students’ academic, spiritual, and emotional growth. The presidential search, conducted with the guidance of the executive search firm CarterBaldwin, included consultations with TWU’s faculty, staff, and students. The search committee, which carefully evaluated candidates, unanimously recommended Dr. Martin for his proven leadership, integrity, and alignment with the university’s mission.
Dr. Martin’s background includes 25 years in pastoral ministry and a diverse academic career. He has authored numerous scholarly works, including three books, and serves as the managing editor of the Journal of Comparative Family Studies. Dr. Martin’s extensive contributions to both scholarship and society, along with his commitment to faith, make him an ideal leader for TWU. A formal inauguration ceremony will take place on April 24, 2025, to welcome Dr. Martin as the university’s sixth president.
