Since its founding in 1924, BBC Education has led the way in educational innovation, inspiring countless numbers of students with innovative programming.

“Our Reithian values to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ are the driving force behind the content we provide young people and their families,” said Patricia Hidalgo, BBC Director of Children’s and Education

BBC Children’s and Education is marking 100 years since its inaugural education broadcast by announcing a £6 million investment in its online education platform, BBC Bitesize. Positioned to become the foremost personalized, trusted, and freely accessible learning platform for the next generation, BBC Bitesize embodies the BBC’s century-long commitment to education. To commemorate this milestone, BBC Teach will air a special Live Lesson on CBBC and BBC iPlayer on April 22nd. This interactive session will engage students in schools nationwide, challenging them to craft their own radio report for CBBC’s cherished Hacker T Dog’s radio show, fostering valuable skills such as interviewing, scriptwriting, and presentation.

Since its establishment in 1924, BBC Education has consistently led educational innovation, captivating generations of learners with pioneering programming. Launched in 1998, Bitesize has evolved into the UK’s most popular online educational resource for schoolchildren, with 47% of students utilizing the platform last year to aid their studies. Amid the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, BBC Education responded by launching Bitesize Daily and producing over 200 hours of original programming, featuring more than 2,000 lessons tailored for students unable to attend school.

Patricia Hidalgo, BBC Director of Children’s and Education: “Our Reithian values to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ are the driving force behind the content we provide young people and their families. To ‘educate’ is at the heart of the BBC’s purpose for the last 100 years and we are so proud of the innovation we have pioneered as we have helped the nation to learn.

We’re continuing this rich heritage as we evolve BBC Bitesize for the next generation of young learners investing in technology to deliver personalised content supported by the educational rigour and trust we have earned over this centenary.”

This substantial investment signifies a pivotal shift in educational content delivery and stands as a cornerstone of BBC Children’s and Education’s commitment to modernizing its education services for the digital era, catering to an audience up to 19 years old. It aims to bolster content discovery, recommendation systems, and self-curation features, ensuring that content is more personalized, relevant, and readily accessible. This initiative aims to streamline the process of learning, homework completion, and exam preparation, making it simpler and more effective for students.
