The year was 2010 when the doors of the National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NITM) were opened under the NIT Act 2007 of the Parliament. The institute is an Institutes of National Importance with full funding support from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and is one of the 31 NITs in India.
The Institute currently offers B.Tech. and M.Tech. Programmes in the five disciplines of engineering viz. Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. It also offers M.Sc. courses in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as well as Ph.D. programmes in all the Engineering, Science and Basic Sciences, and Humanities.
NITM’s faculty is quite young and had their education and research training from reputed institutes of the country and abroad. However, within such a short period of commencement, the institute has been bestowed with many laurels and awards from different sectors. Since the inception of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by Govt. of India, the institute has been placed within the Top 100 Engineering Institutes of India with improvement in its ranking year on year. Presently it ranks 67th in Engineering.

NITM’s visionary Director, Prof. Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal, has a profound impact on the development of this new institute and has provided the right leadership to the faculty, students, and staff. Under his able leadership, the Institute marches ahead with success at every front. It has been recognized for its superlative performance by a number of agencies and faculty for being able to attract many sponsored and consultancy projects from national and private agencies.
Alongside, Mr. Sajjan Bhajanka, Founder and Chairman of Century Group of Industries, has been providing all sorts of support and guidance through his vast wisdom as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute. He has been playing a mentor’s role to take the institute to the next higher level.
Glorious Infrastructure
Nestled at Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya, India, NITM is sprawled across 330 acres of land in a beautiful and serene campus. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for higher education in Science and Technology, the institute has been able to attract students across the country as well as from outside the country.
Students attain quality education while accommodating in comfortable hostels, equipped with a recreation room with facilities such as cable television, magazines, newspapers, and indoor games, and in-room internet connectivity.
Beyond the regular course curriculum, the Institute has a student council, which is elected through voting by students every year, to carry out student affairs. Apart from many festivities round the year, NITM organizes two major college festivals; Cognitia (Technical Festival), and Shishir (Cultural Festival) in an academic year.
Besides these, the institute also organizes sports fest such as Intra-NIT and also participates in Inter-NIT competitions. Furthermore, professional activities and Recreational Activities are an integral part of the students’ life in the institute. Various satellite clubs under the Students Activity Centre (SAC) are arranged and managed for the overall growth of the students. The institute also conducts various programmes under Government India’s flagship programmes Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat (EBSB) and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA).

At NITM, the Centre for Career Development plays an integral part in setting up the careers of students. The Centre aims to make each and every student of NIT Meghalaya a success story and to impart legendary leadership qualities to all the students.
The Centre carries out the following functions:
- Final Placement of the final year students of all the programmes viz. B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc. and research scholars in domestic and international corporate houses of repute
- Internship of the 4th and 6th-semester students of the various programmes
- Conducting employability enhancement programmes and workshops
- Conducting career counseling programmes and workshops
The Institute has all the state-of-the-art facilities to facilitate the campus hiring activities of the companies. It has a well-furnished hall for pre-placement talks, a well-furnished group discussion room to hold group discussions, and interview rooms. Additionally, the halls have computers to conduct online tests in the pre-placement talk’s venue itself. The Centre also utilizes the Conference Hall of the Institute for carrying out video conferencing and the Computer Centre when the need arises.
Backed up with such power, the Center feels privileged to generate competent well-groomed manpower resources over the years by functioning as a vital bridge between the students of the institute and the industries. The placement records are quite good, and the students get multiple offers from companies which include private corporates and PSUs. The already established Centre for Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship motivates students to take up entrepreneurship as a career. The center also supports start-up activities by the students and alumni. Also, a good number of students go for higher studies to Universities in India and abroad.
