Nirma University (NU) is one of India’s leading universities situated in Ahmedabad. Established in the year 2003, NU is a value-driven, research-oriented, and student centred non-profit institution. Within a short period of its existence, it has emerged as a nationally renowned higher education institution. It is a statutory university, duly recognised by the UGC under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act.

Spread across a lush green 115-acres campus, the university consists of Institute of Architecture & Planning, Institute of Technology, Institute of Management, Institute of Pharmacy, Institute of Science, Institute of Law, Institute of Commerce, Department of Design, Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research, Centre for Continuing Education, and Centre for Entrepreneurship. These institutions offer numerous undergraduate, post graduate, and PhD programmes.

Exceptional Infrastructure

The university campus is located next to the intersection of Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway and S.P. ring road in the city of Ahmedabad towards Gandhinagar. The campus has good connectivity to all parts of the city, its transport hubs, and transit systems. NU’s institutes, departments, and centres have amenities like amphi-theatre class rooms equipped with multi-media and audio-visual equipment, spacious seminar halls and auditoriums, hi-tech advanced laboratories, and so on. Wi-Fi hotspots enable constant internet connectivity on the campus. Medical facility in the form of a doctor’s clinic and round the clock ambulance facility is available for any on-campus medical necessities. Additional facilities include digitally connected libraries, sports facilities, and hostel and dining facilities.

To upgrade and update infrastructural facilities at NU, three buildings are being added to the campus, which will add 1,52,337 sq mts area to the existing 1,31,189 sq mts. These buildings will consist of classroom clusters, a large computer centre, a convention centre, an institute, central library, and administrative spaces.

Pursuing Academic Excellence

In order to keep pace with the current education system, the university has adopted a philosophy of learner centric teaching by developing a system of outcome based education (OBE). Programme educational objectives (PEO) and programme outcomes (PO) of every programme are broadly outlined to provide highest standards of education. They are designed to prepare students to pursue life-long learning and knowledge advancement, to become successful professionals and entrepreneurs, to contribute to society and become responsible citizens, etc.

Statutory bodies of the university like board of governors, academic council, finance committee, faculties, board of studies, area committees, and scholars are responsible for maintaining comprehensive and multidisciplinary course contents and adopting innovative teaching-learning techniques for implementing OBE. The curriculum show-cases horizontal (in the same semester) and vertical (in previous and following semesters) integration of subjects for imparting comprehensive knowledge to students. 

Promoting Students’ Development

To encourage and help the meritorious and non-affording students, NU provides various scholarships every year. Prevention of Ragging and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Cell functions strictly as per the guidelines of the honourable supreme court of India and UGC.

It is committed to provide equal opportunities, be inclusive and promote diversity within students, teachers, and staff. Its system of mentoring students, student feedback, and parents meeting promotes dialogue, discussion, and deliberation among stakeholders to spread awareness, monitor progress, and provide counselling.

About the Chairman

PadmaShri Dr. Karsanbhai K Patel is the founder President of NU. Chairman of Nirma Limited and founder President of Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF), he is an industrialist of global repute and a visionary in the field of education. He is also the recipient of numerous laurels like ‘Udyog Ratna’ Award-1990, ‘Gujarat Businessman’ Award-1998, Ernst & Young ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award-2006, and so on. Dr Patel is renowned for his contribution to industrial development in the country. In the last 20 years, he has turned his attention to the growing challenges in education. 

Noteworthy Achievements

NU has received numerous laurels for its dedicated endeavours. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has consistently ranked NU among the top 100 institutions in the country. As per the recent Gujarat State Institutional Rating Framework, the university is placed at the top of the list of private universities in Gujarat with a four-star ranking.

Career Opportunities and Exposures

NU provides full placement support to its students in the fields of technology, management, law, pharmacy, and life sciences. Over the last few decades, the university has emerged as one of the most favoured destination for hiring fresh talent from the campuses. A Centre for Entrepreneurship has also been established to promote entrepreneurship among the students of by creating an effective ecosystem to start scalable new business ventures.

The Path Ahead

NU plans to initiate new programs in the field of humanities and social sciences enhance programmes in architecture and planning, and other creative fields in the future. More post-graduate programs will also be offered in various departments. The university projects that student strength will increase from 8000 to 12000 in the coming years. To further the cause of focused research, the university has planned to set-up few centers of excellence, which will enable learning from best practices, enhance research, support, and training in the areas like robotics, urban studies, nanotechnology, biotechnology etc.
