Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (PMIST) (Deemed to be University) was established in 1988 as Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women (PMCTW), the world’s first engineering college exclusively for women. The Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women was named after the great social reformer of the twentieth century E. V. Ramasamy, popularly known as ‘Thanthai Periyar’ and his Philanthrophic wife Annai Maniammaiyar. Being the first Women’s Engineering College institutionalizing the lofty ideals of Periyar by paving way for women’s emancipation, it has provided increased access to higher education in science and technology, encouraging their participation in social, national and global developments. In fact, more than 10,000 women graduated from PMIST and have become leading technocrats.

The college started with the approval of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, initially affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli and later to Anna University, Chennai from 2001.  Since, 17th August 2007, it has been functioning as a Deemed to be University with the approval of the UGC and Ministry of Human Resources Development, New Delhi.

Astounding Infrastructure 

The sprawling campus of PMIST is spread over 219 acres. Continuous efforts like maintaining energy efficiency, controlling pollution, practicing zero waste, and well-erected infrastructure culminated into a campus of green meadow, shady trees, and canopies of creepers provide an ideal environment for learning and living.

PMIST is well known and recognized as a pioneer in various green practices towards zero carbon 2025; such as massive tree planting, resorting to alternative building materials, energy audit, reduction of waste in energy and increasing the use of renewable energy by bio-methanation and solar power, rain water harvesting solid and liquid waste management, paper reprocessing, and so on.

The institute also provides a variety of facilities including bank; 24×7 hospitals with doctors;

three-floored library with 90,863 volumes, 265 Journals, E-journals, and J-GATE databases. It also includes Shri.V.P.Singh Multipurpose Indoor Stadium with indoor sports facilities such as badminton courts, basketball court, etc. There is a cafeteria that offers a wide range of South Indian and North Indian Cuisines. Also, 15 buses transport students and staff from various locations in and around Thanjavur. The institute provides Wi-Fi with 1 Gbps speed and National Knowledge Network (NKN) internet connectivity covering the entire campus.

Academic Programs

PMIST offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes in diverse areas like Engineering, Architecture, Interior Designing, Sciences, Computer Applications, Commerce and many more. The institute has implemented Choice Based Credit system (CBCS) and Outcome Based Education (OBE) that enables the students to Think, Innovate & Transform their own ideas and also enabling flexibility in their pursuit of acquiring relevant knowledge in order to compete with the need of dynamic technological requirements.  In order to attain the goal; PMIST trains them with competent faculty and state of art infrastructure facilities.

PMIST provides student centred learning methods which measures students’ performance empirically. Skill enhancement programmes like project to product, Open House (a platform provided to exhibit technical talents) along with seminars, workshops, in-plant trainings, and internships are practiced as the part of the curriculum. The institute explores new avenues of education to fulfil their knowledge and technical skills in building a developed nation, particularly in industries, business, and social sectors.

Renowned Alumni

PMIST has produced many graduates who have been successful in various walks of life. Some of the institute’s distinguished alumni are working with various Government sectors, BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd, Hyderabad, Larsen & Turbo, MRF, and well known MNC’s such as HP, CTS, Infosys, Accenture, etc.

PMIST’s alumni associations are active in New Jersey, New York, Singapore, and Malaysia. Also, some graduates of the institute became Entrepreneurs and Managing Director for their own concerns.

Accreditations

The institution has completed 4 cycles of accreditation from National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of AICTE since 1998 for courses offered by PMCTW.  After becoming a Deemed to be University in 2007, the University was accredited (Cycle – 1) by NAAC in Jan 2009 and reaccredited (Cycle – 2) during Nov. 2015.

About the Chancellor

Esteemed Chancellor, Dr. K.Veeramani, M.A, B.L leads PMIST towards excellence and prosperity. He is the founder of 17 educational and charitable organizations; a member of International Humanist & Ethical Union and British Humanist Society, England. He is an inspiring scholar who has authored more than 150 books. He has been the Chief Editor of the leading rationalist daily ‘Viduthalai’, for more than five decades. Being an ardent follower of ‘Thanthai Periyar’, Dr. Veeramani has institutionalized his principles by paving way for underprivileged and down-trodden.

Remarkable Achievements

The institute has made many accomplishments throughout its celebrated journey. PMIST has been recognised as the Nodal organization for CHILDLINE (child care and protection) covering Thanjavur district since 2011; which is funded by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. It was adjudged as the “Best private University in India” for Education Transformation for the year 2018, a prestigious award by ASSOCHAM in the annual Conference cum Awards Event “Entrepreneurs India: Gain & Misses”.

As an Extension activity, Periyar PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Area) was initiated by PMIST adopting 67 villages with a population of about 1,90,000 people in Thanjavur, Puthukottai and Trichirapalli Districts.

Impressed by the activities carried out by Periyar PURA Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam visited PMIST Six times and highlighted PMIST and its extension activities of Periyar PURA to other states in his book “Target Three Billion”. During his visits he inaugurated various technological innovations in the premises.

Periyar PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Area) has been appreciated by Dr. Kalam in his address on the eve of the Independence Day 2006 which was nationally broadcasted. The institute’s students turned entrepreneurs had won twice “Best Incubatee Company Awards” from Indian STEPs and Business Incubators Association (ISBA). One among them was selected for “Biotechnology Ignition Grant” from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Also, students participated in real time innovation projects and developed semi-automatic buffing machine, stainless steel industrial drier for Arecanut sheaths for usage in Andaman Island.

Major Events Organized

PMIST aims to provide student-centred education to foster their critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship, problem solving, and collaborative work. It organizes various events for the overall development of the students.

Experts from DRDO, ISRO, CECRI and premier national & international institutions like IISC, IIT, NIT New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Texas, University of Mary Land, Cape Breton University have been invited for lectures to guide students and faculty members in research. Students and Faculty members have access to NMEICT – National Mission on Education through Information and Communication and Technology (An initiative of MHRD, Govt. of India) programmes, NPTEL contents, Digital Library. The institute facilitates the students towards personality development and leadership qualities by organizing events, workshops through students clubs and societies. Periyar FM (90.4 MHz), a community radio system is entirely operated by ECE students. It broadcasts programmes on Education, Agriculture, Job Opportunities, and Health impacts for the benefit of students and rural people in and around 24 Kms.

The faculty and students of PMIST conducted asset mapping in association with ISRO-Bhuvan for Thanjavur district. PMIST is leading the Clean Thanjavur Movement in Thanjavur and adjoining areas with the help of 85,000 volunteers.

Career Opportunities & Exposures

Periyar Technology Business Incubator creates awareness on Entrepreneurship, encourages students towards innovative thinking, and mentors them to identify suitable idea for creating new business. It provides space, instruments, and mentoring to students, and even helps them getting financial support. Students are involved in consultancy services which give unique opportunities for them to earn while they learn through real time projects.

Value added programmes such as ANSYS, Pro/E, NDT, MASTERCAM, Global Asset Certification programme, AutoCAD, and many more are also conducted by PMIST. The Centre for University and Industry Interaction (CUII) takes care of Training and Placement.  To train the students in cutting-edge technologies, PMIST offers training on optical networking through Centre of Excellence for Next Generation Network (CENGN) in association with TEJAS networks; Training on Industrial Automation is offered by Centre of Excellence for Training and Research in Automation Technology (CETAT) in association with BOSCH Rexroth.

Future Plans

PMIST plans to start new programmes in Pharmacy, Agriculture, Law, and other programmes related to Humanities & Sciences. It aims to strengthen and outreach activities in all the areas of connectivity by introducing such innovative programmes. Moreover, the institute plans to collaborate with various renowned institutions nationally and internationally at regular intervals.
