Inspiring students by our motto, “to attain the joy of excellence in the world of high technology”- always remembering that service to one’s neighbour is a greater service to one’s own self.

Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE), Mumbai is a Jesuit Institute and it began in the early 1930s on the premises of St Xavier’s College, Fort, Mumbai. However, additional space was required and that was found in Mahim, where it stands today. To provide quality education in IT, Computers, and Electronics in 2005 a degree-level college, XIE, was set up. The institute is accredited by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council)/ XIE has been NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) accredited.

XIE offers degree level courses in Computers, Information Technology, and Electronics and Telecommunicaon Engineering. XIE not only focusses on training the mind and gaining bookish knowledge, but begins with the premise that encountering reality in the world is less a threat and more of an opportunity to realize a person’s true potential. The institute’s programmes offer students a holistic formation and benefits from the one-on-one chats with their mentors.

The laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment and excellent library, entrepreneurial-cells, an Incubation Centre, and spacious classroom. It also invites outside professionals to conduct special courses on latest technology in Computers and Electronics. XIE being a Jesuit Institute is driven by 4 Cs: Conscience, Commitment, Compassion, and Competence.

The Guiding Lights

Fr. Dr. John Rose currently helms the position of the Director. He is a PhD holder from Santa Clara University, USA, who has implemented project-based learning, which has helped improve the academic standards of XIE. Fr. Reginald Tauro, a post graduate from Marquette University, USA, was the first director of XIE, who meticulously inculcated human values at the institute. His successor was Fr. Francis de Melo, an IIT graduate from Bombay. He was the source of inspiration for the students and staff and trained them how to exercise the brain and introduced outcome based learning.

The Revolutionary Stride

Running successfully over the decades, the institute has a number of factors which has made it a prominent brand today. Its dedicated faculty, on-going improvement of facilities and equipment, tie-ups with other similar institutes in the country and abroad, introducing new courses and projects to update the learning process and reading the signs of the time for placement opportunities are the core strengths of the institute. One of the momentous achievements was the setting up of the “Gait Lab,” which has been sponsored by Marquette University, Milwaukee, USA. The lab uses state-of-the-art computer technology to capture a 3-D image of a person’s walk. St Xavier’s Gait Lab has been recognized by the Government of Maharashtra and the Government hospitals are sending children to seek its help as it is the only lab in Mumbai.

The Notable Alumni

Xavier Institute of Engineering has a rich pool of Alumni. These highly accomplished graduates own their companies like E-nexus, GDIZ, Oreon Web Solutions, Scintillate, Bytes, Qubelinks, and Tejash Cyber Solutions. Roger Drago, the Managing Director of ‘Electrocraft’, is a former student of the institute, and is well known internationally for his expertise in Sound Engineering. XIE in collaboration with Electrocraft offers a certificate course in Sound Engineering. The Alumni often come to share their expertise and conduct seminars in the campus.

Bestowing with Utmost Offerings

The institute conducts effective initiatives to foster students to excel at their best. Under one such activity/One such activity includes- groups of students go to the rural areas on a regular basis to share their skills with school children in village boarding establishments. Such programmes enrich the children and students alike. XIE organizes three festivals every year: Transmission for technical achievements, Spandan for cultural expression and SparX for sporting prowess. Apart from these, it hosts workshops and seminars on sustainability and technology, TEDx talks, Mock UN, Summer Programmes at ICAM, France, and Harrisburg University, USA.

Major Achievements

Over the course of time, the institute has achieved many milestones. Holy Family Hospital in Bandra invited XIE to equip it with the necessary software for the efficient running of their medical facilities. XIE provided iTV goggles for the Advanced Centre for Treatment Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) situated in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. With these iTV goggles, patients can now read their breathing levels while undergoing radiation therapy. It has set up an FM station for community development, which schedules educative programmes for children in Dharavi (including learning material).

About the Career Opportunities and the Future Plans

XIE is affiliated to Mumbai University. The management takes into consideration the changing needs of industry. Accordingly, it has added various courses over the year like programming skills in Python, Embedded systems, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and many more. As a consequence, this attracts the major Industries and Corporations like Reliance JIO, L&T Infotech, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Mahindra Tech.

Marching forward, the institute plans to starting an M.E. programme in Computers, Electronics & Telecommunications and BE in Automobile Engineering. Further, a new company that aims at changing diesel vehicles into semi and fully electrically-driven ones, has asked for XIE’s collaboration. The students are trained by the companies in constructing Willmills and Solar panels to promote sustainability. Such a collaboration brings along with it opportunities for placements and training.
