JNU Re-assist Deprivation Point Model for PhD Students

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, the vice-chancellor, said that the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) would reintroduce the deprivation point model as a unique feature, especially for PhD students.

The university reintroduced this feature to help the backward region students, and specifically, women can, take admissions. This feature has desisted a few years back under the guidance of M Jagadesh Kumar, the previous vice-chancellor of the university. And the students and teachers have been demanding the deprivation point model for a long time.

On Wednesday, in a PTI interview, Santishree said that “the varsity is re-establishing the deprivation point model for ‘inclusivity and equity in the campus.”

She added, “The university will bring back the deprivation point PhD students because the reserved category seats don’t get filled up. I come from a reserved category; similarly, I would like to see it implemented, especially for women from the reserved category. We want inclusivity and equity.”
